1. Bioversity International: 2009 Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship.
What: Bioversity International has issued a call for the 2009 Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship. The aim of the Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship Fund is to encourage the conservation and use of plant genetic resources by enabling outstanding young scientists to carry out relevant, innovative research outside their own countries for a period of between three months and one year. Two Fellowship opportunities will be available for 2009 to carry out research on conservation and use of Plant Genetic Resources. One of the Fellowships will be supported by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., United States. The second Fellowship is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Australia.
Who: Nationals of developing countries, aged 35 or under, holding a masters degree (or equivalent) and/or doctorate in a relevant subject area. 2. The Young Professionals' Platform for Agricultural Research (YPARD): New Local and Regional Initiatives.
What: YPARD is calling for proposals for individuals and organizations wishing to set up local and regional initiatives. With funds from SDC (Swiss Development Cooperation), YPARD will be supporting these local/regional initiatives. Each approved initiative will be granted with a maximum of EUR5, 000 seed funds. Funds are available for supporting a maximum number of five initiatives. Young professionals and any organizations in agricultural research for development may join forces with other individuals and/or organizations in their country or region to bring together other young professionals (YPs) to discuss, debate and act on key issues revolving Agricultural Research for Development (ARD). The group of individuals or organizations that seeks to institutionalize this way of interacting should send a concept note or proposal to the YPARD Coordination Unit.
Who: Any young professional with age below 40 and any organization in agricultural research for development.

3. The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM): PhD Scholarships in Dryland Resource Management.
What: RUFORUM is offering a few scholarships for the regional PhD program in Dryland Resource Management. The program will be hosted in Kenya by the University of Nairobi, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology, but run on a regional platform.
Who: Applicants from Botswana, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are eligible to apply. Applicants should first apply to the University of Nairobi for admission to the program. University academic staff and agro-meteorologists / meteorologists are encouraged to apply.

4. West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI): Ph.D Program.
What: WACCI is currently accepting applications for January 2009 fellowships. Eight students per year will be admitted over a period of five years in the first phase of the program. Each student will follow a 5 year program leading to the award of a Ph.D (Plant Breeding) upon successful completion. The program consists of two stages: two years of academic study at the University of Ghana and three years of field research at the student's research station/university in his/her home country.

5. Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa (SSSUP): Doctorate Scholarships in Agrobiodiversity.
What: The PhD Program in Agrobiodiversity is aimed at the enhancement of human resource capacities in the use and management of genetic variation in agricultural and natural systems, in order to improve the sustainability of agricultural systems and the conservation of genetic resources for the well-being of present and future generations.
Who: Applicants must possess a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree or equivalent title in Experimental Sciences, at an Italian or foreign university and ssession of a Degree awarded after, at least, a four-year course in Experimental Sciences; applicants should be younger than 35 years (date of birth after 1 October 1973), applicants who are older than 35 may be exceptionally admitted by the Admission Committee.

6. African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP).
What: Applications are invited for the inaugural round of African Climate Change Fellowships. The African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) aims to support African professionals, researchers and graduate students to undertake activities that will enhance their capacities for advancing and applying knowledge for climate change adaptation in Africa. The program is jointly administered by the global change SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training (START), the Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA) of the University of Dar es Salaam and the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), with financial support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada.
Who: Citizens of member states of the African Union who are 40 years of age or younger.

7. The MOABI Foundation: Moabi Stipendium for African Botanists.
What: The MOABI Foundation aims at stimulating the enrichment of knowledge on the diversity of the tropical African vegetation. Its main purpose is to support young African botanists, who are qualifying for this area of research. Applications are invited for Moabi stipend (of the range of 1000 - 2000 Euros). The money you get can be used for your training, a study trip, cover the costs of travel and accommodation or the delivery of a publication.
Who: Applicants must be an African junior scientist in the field of plant taxonomy. Undergraduate, Master's and PhD students can apply.

8. The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW): Fellowships and Awards for the Academic Year 2009-2010.
What: Each year, CFUW provides a range of awards and fellowships to women through its charitable trust program to encourage the development of high quality scholarship.

9. The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS): Prizes for Young Scientists in Developing Countries.
What: TWAS provides financial assistance to national science academies, scientific research councils and ministries of science and technology in a number of developing countries to enable them to institute a scheme of TWAS prizes for young scientists. The prizes are awarded each year in various fields of natural sciences on a rotating basis. TWAS shall make available a yearly amount of up to US$2,000 as prize money. Each awarding organization may decide whether to divide this amount into more than one prize per year.

10. African Network of Scientific and Technological Institution (ANSTI): Conference Grants.
What: Grants to attend international meetings to present papers. A maximum amount of $2,500 is awarded.

11. The Natural Environment Research Council: Research Fellowships.
What: The Natural Environment Research Council Fellowship scheme provides opportunities for outstanding environmental scientists to devote their time to research, develop their research careers and produce work of international importance. Around thirty fellowships are available to start around October 2009.
Who: NERC Fellowships are open to any nationality.

12. The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NOW): The Rubicon Program.
What: The Rubicon program is directed at promising young postdoctoral researchers who are still at the start of their careers but whose academic strengths give them the potential to become established figures in the Dutch research world. Young researchers spend up to two years at a top research institution outside the Netherlands or one year at an excellent Dutch research institution. The program also offers talented researchers from abroad the opportunity to obtain grants to spend one year conducting research in the Netherlands.
Who: Researchers from all scientific disciplines.

13. The Singapore National Research Foundation: Research Fellowship.
What: The Singapore NRF Research Fellowship will provide attractive funding to brilliant, young scientists and researchers to carry out independent, leading edge research in Singapore. Appointees could be offered concurrent faculty positions at local universities or other research organizations. This will build up a pool of bright, passionate researchers in various fields to augment Singapore’s research talent pool.
Who: The fellowship is open to talented scientists and researchers from all nationalities who are conducting research in all disciplines of science and technology.

14. Asian Institute of Technology: UNEP Masters Scholarships for January 2009.
What: UNEP Master’s scholarships will be offered across the five regions of Asia – North East, South Pacific, South East Asia, South Asia, and Central Asia. Students can be admitted to any of the academic field of studies at AIT but their research activities should be directly linked to UNEP’s thematic areas.
Who: The scholarship program is principally aimed mid-level professionals from national government agencies and inter-governmental organizations who are associated with national and regional program implementation, technical evaluation and policy formulation activities related to environment and sustainable development.

15. Asian Development Bank: Japan Scholarship Program.
What: The Japan Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB's developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region. The ADB-JSP provides full scholarships for one to two years.
Who: Citizens of ADB’s developing member countries.

16. International Development Research Centre (IDRC): The Bentley Cropping Systems Fellowship.
What: The fellowship provides assistance to Canadian and developing-country graduate students with a university degree in agriculture, forestry or biology, who wish to undertake postgraduate, applied, on-farm research with cooperating farmers in a developing country.
Who: Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or citizens of a developing country who are currently enrolled full-time in a graduate program (Master’s, doctoral, post-doctoral) at a recognized university in Canada or in a developing country for the duration of the award period.

17. IDRC Internship Awards.
What: The IDRC Internship awards provide exposure to research for international development through a program of training in research management and grant administration under the guidance of IDRC program staff. The internship is designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in research program management - in the creation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective.
Who: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and citizens of developing countries. They must be either currently registered in a Master's Program or have completed a Master's Degree in a recognized university. Their research must focus on a developing country.

18. The African Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES): Scholarship program.
What: The African Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES) is a non-profit agency that supports Kenyan students by providing post-secondary scholarships. The scholarships are for study at Kenyan universities and technical colleges.

19. Commonwealth Foundation Grants.
What: The Foundation's responsive grants enable people from developing Commonwealth countries to participate in activities such as short training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, cultural festivals, exchanges and study visits in other Commonwealth countries. In particular, the Foundation targets activities that strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations in areas of work that overlap with the Foundation's three program areas: Governance and Democracy; Sustainable Development; and Culture and Diversity.
Who: Organizations from, and citizens of, developing Commonwealth Foundation-member countries.

20. Hayek Fund for Scholars.
What: The Hayek Fund for Scholars makes strategic awards of up to $1,000 to graduate students and untenured faculty members for career-enhancing activities such as; presentations at academic or professional conferences, travel to academic job interviews (on campus or at professional/academic conferences), travel to and research at archives or libraries, participation in career development or enhancing seminars, distribution of a published article to colleagues in your field, submission of unpublished manuscripts to journals or book publishers.

21. Selby Travelling Fellowship.
What: Selby Travelling Fellowship is awarded to distinguished overseas scientists to visit Australia for public lecture/seminar tours and to visit scientific centres in Australia. Fellows are expected to increase public awareness of science and scientific issues and accordingly will be outstanding lecturers to the general lay public. Fellowships are tenable for visits of not less than two weeks and not more than three months. Up to $A10,000 is available to cover economy airfares and assistance towards living expenses.

22. The Southeast Asia Urban Environmental Management: Urban Environment Management Graduate Education.
What: Appreciating the need of a pool of UEM graduates, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is providing full scholarships for selected applicants from countries of Southeast Asia to pursue their study at master and doctoral levels in Urban Environmental Management at the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), Asian Institute of Technology. Each Scholarship provides successful applicants with support for full tuition, accommodation and a monthly bursary towards living expenses as per AIT standards, for the duration of the study program. The master program is for a period of four semesters (22 months) and the doctoral degree program is for six semesters (36 months).

23. Asian Institute of Technology: Master's and Doctorate Scholarships in Sustainable Development.
What: The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Asian Institute of Technology have partnered to offer a program called “Education for Sustainable Development” from 2006 to 2009. Students from developing Asian nations are offered the chance to pursue their master's or doctoral studies in fields relating to sustainable development at one of Asia's leading postgraduate institutions. The scholarships cover degree programs in fields relevant to sustainable environment, human rights and gender, and poverty alleviation. The core idea of the scholarships is to support Norwegian program countries in Asia with emphasis on sustainable development for enhancing institutional capacity building.
Who: Students from countries in South and Southeast Asia. – Afghanistan , Bangladesh , East Timor, Nepal, Pakistan , Sri Lanka and Vietnam – the Mekong region low-income countries of Lao PDR and Cambodia, as well as other less developed countries in Asia .

24. The African Forest Research Network (AFORNET): Junior Scientists Fellowship Program.
What: The JSF program supports research in forest science and related areas.
Who: The grants are open to promising African scientists affiliated to training and research institutions in Africa who have shown the potential to undertake creative and innovative research in forestry in Africa, whether individually or as a team.
When: 31st March and 30th September of each year.

25. The African Forest Research Network (AFORNET): Senior Scientists Fellowship Program.
What: AFORNET is also inviting African tree and forest scientists to submit multi-disciplinary and transnational research proposals that fall under one of the following thematic areas: woodland, natural forests and biodiversity conservation; community-based forestry; reforestation and rehabilitation of degraded and arid lands; socio-economics and policy issues; and non-timber forest products and lesser known timber.
Who: Grants are open to teams of senior scientists who are willing to undertake collaborative and transnational research in Africa. There is no age limit for the applicants to the Senior Scientists’ Fellowship Program.

26. The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA): Robert McNamara/EADB Graduate Scholarship in Development Studies.
What: This program offers three scholarships each year to citizens of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda who wish to pursue studies leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Development Studies in a recognized institution of higher learning in East Africa. The scholarship was established in 2003 by the East African Development Bank in honor of Mr. Robert McNamara, former World Bank President and member of EADB’s Panel of Advisors, for his role and efforts in promoting social and economic development.

27. Swiss Center for International Agriculture: Research Fellow Partnership Program.
What: The overall objective of the Research Fellow Partnership Program for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources (RFPP) is to enhance the human resource base for research in the fields of agriculture, forestry and natural resource management in international development. RFPP aims at generating development relevant knowledge, training young scientists and establishing research partnerships. These objectives shall be achieved by supporting PhD and post-doctoral fellowships as well as by promoting internships. RFPP projects shall be embedded in research partnerships between a CGIAR centre (or equivalent) and a Swiss research institution.
Who: Swiss (or “well established” Swiss resident), or developing / transition country nationals.
