Christian Mission Aid is urgently looking for a Health and Counseling coordinator to work in our HIV/AIDs program in Nyanza District.

General Function/Responsibilities

The vision of CMA through the CLEAR program is to reduce the spread of HIV and mitigate the challenges of AIDS. Our vision is a world in which people do not die of AIDS. Since 1999, the CLEAR project has continued to implement activities which focus on prevention, care, treatment and support under wholistic Home Based Care as well as the mitigation of socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS. In this endeavor, CMA has sensitized over 500,000 people, offered HBC to over 700 PLWAs and supported over 200 affected families by addressing their various needs namely, shelter, health, education, livelihood, water and environmental sanitation.

In seeking to strengthen and consolidate the project gains, the post of HBC and Counseling Coordinator has been created so as to become part of the Home Based Care and Counseling Capacity Building Project whose main purpose is to empower men and women counselors, CBOs, women's groups and CLEAR committees to improve the lives of those rural households most severely affected by HIV/AIDS. The holder of this position will actively participate in the planning and implementation of policy and strategy of the team. S/he will be responsible for managing and providing technical support necessary for the effective implementation of Health and Counseling activities. The project will also use participatory methodologies to identify community perceptions and readiness to move from dependency to self-reliance and use the findings to identify community priorities and specific initiatives that can be supported. The work will entail collaboration with other key stakeholders within the project sites.

Specific Duties

  1. Provide appropriate training/monitoring/supervision to the CLEAR project's team of trained community leaders within the various HBC components: Palliative Care, Nutritional support, psychosocial support, counseling,
  2. Maintain standards for training, practice, record keeping and reporting as outlined by the donor within the prescribed schedule. This is to be done through provision of written monthly report detailing successes and constraints towards achieving goals and plans for the following month, along with all records and/or statistics collected under his/her supervision for that month.
  3. Conduct routine visits so as to provide support to all CLEAR team on medical cases referred by the trained community leaders, or to assist with difficult/complicated HIV/AIDS related opportunistic infections [OI].
  4. Participate in all the programmatic schedules of the health sector namely, nutrition, EPI and related surveys, mass treatment programs, and community outreach as required by the ministry of health as well as other on-site needs.
  5. Meet regularly with counterparts, MoH and other community leaders to discuss the HBC program development, to evaluate local program staff, and to plan future activities to expand upon programs and increase counseling and HBC access to outreach areas.
  6. Keep the Program Manager appraised of all HBC and counseling activities and preempt any difficulties that may arise by suggesting apt mitigation strategies.
  7. In close consultation with the Project Manager, assist in identifying key activities that need to be infused into the grant requests.
  8. To assist with the hosting of various stakeholders e.g. donors, evaluators, government officers, missionaries as well as students on a learning tour during field visits to the project sites where relevant to the CLEAR program.

Essential and Desirable qualifications

Education/Knowledge

  • Diploma in medical sciences/Nursing or Higher National Diploma from a recognized tertiary Institution.
  • Professional training on counseling
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and sexual counseling would be an added advantage

Experience required

  • Relevant experience on management and Control of opportunistic infections that affect PLWAs
  • Relevant experience on the fundamentals of ARV/ART
  • Experience of working with an international NGO implementing similar programs
  • Experience working with people affected by plaques

Abilities and Skills required

  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and local language verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide technical support to various targeted groups on HBC and counseling
  • Excellent Communications skills.
  • Some experience of providing training and putting together training materials
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Capable of working both independently and as part of a team.

Personal qualities

  • Highly motivated and flexible.
  • Able and willing to travel for up to 60% of working time.
  • Commitment to HIV and development work.
  • Enjoy working within a multicultural environment
