MEDIA LAB STUDENT’S SELECTION REPORT

Finally we have our Medialab students for the first and second quarter of the year 2012. We had trained 60 students in course two and three for the period July-December 2011.Out of these sixty students, two dropped out of the course for reasons unknown to us, eight were eliminated and 50 were selected for Medialab.

NairoBits value gender balance and as such we selected 23 boys and 27 girls for media lab. The selection procedure and criteria was very transparent and fair. We did look at: - the exams-results, attendance, discipline, skills mastery, availability for training, soft skills, and attitude in general.

The rigorous interview and strict selection process had twist and turns. Victor Nyaga had been selected to attend Medialab course but rescinded his position after receiving invitation to attend University training. After lengthy consultation with the trainers’ in-charge, Mary Njeri Njoroge was selected to replace him.

As we begin on the 19^th January 2012 to 15^th June 2012, we have a total of 50 students in the class. Five of these successful candidates are on probation. This means that these are students with specials training needs that need extra attention and care. We believe they possess a lot of potential but would not deliver if not pushed to do so.

At the staff level we had Eli Mnuve promoted to a higher level within the organization. And from this January he will be working across border specifically at Musoma in Tanzania. In Eli’s place we have contracted one of our former best students in the name Kennedy Kioli. We do appreciate and remain grateful for the great services rendered by Eli and it is in our hope Kennedy will fill in the big gap left behind.

Position: Driver/ Office Administrator

Youth Vocational training program

Project summary: The European Union and Kinderbothilfe are supporting vocational training in three Kenyan organizations Nairobits Trust, Ethi and East Leigh community centre. The implementation of this project is done by a secretariat stationed at Nairobits.

Position summary: The secretariat is seeking candidates for the position of driver/office assistant. Under the direction of the Program Manger EU/KNH project, the officer will serve both the coordination office and the three implementing organizations in the vocational training initiative. The candidate MUST be familiar with Office Administration work, have accident free driving record and should have performed similar duties for a period of not less than 5 years. The driver is a member of the project team and should therefore, be able to provide basic administrative support to Nairobits and the coordination office.The position is based in Nairobi with frequent field travels.

Skills and Attributes

1. 1. Possession of a valid national driving licence

Musoma Trainer Job Advertisement
Nairobits is youth empowerment initiative that draws target youth from the informal settlements (slums) around Nairobi. Nairobits primary objective is to provide vulnerable youth from East Africa with technical, life and entrepreneurial skills that will allow them to improve their prospects in life. With a focus on Information and Communications Technology (ICT, Nairobits endeavors to give youth marketable skills than enable them to challenge the social and economic factors that make them vulnerable.
Owing the success of concept in Nairobi Kenya, Terre des Hommes Netherlands is supporting Nairobits to replicate this concept in Musoma, Tanzania. The project is called Musoma Information Centre. Musoma Information Centre is recruiting a trainer.
The position is available from January 2012 for an initial period of six months. The candidate must be available immediately and willing to work as an intern and undergo an intensive training of trainers training.

Main purpose of the job
To design, deliver information and communication technology (ICT) training specifically in areas of computer applications, creative thinking and web design in consultation with the senior trainers in Nairobi. The trainer will also train the centre’s specific courses of Multimedia, entrepreneurship and life skills.

Key responsibilities and tasks:
1. Assist in curriculum development

‘DANCE FOR LIFE’ A RESEARCH PROJECT BY UNITED FOR BODY RIGHTS (UFBR) ORGANIZATIONS.

The theme of this workshop was “Increasing acceptance of sexual reproductive health and rights in the community.” The second phase of research training workshop on SRHR was hosted on the 3^rd and 4^th November 2011 by Center for Study of Adolescents (CSA) at Rosamystica. CSA was leading research on behalf of partners like CSA, AMREF, Africa Alive, Saipeh and NairoBits under the umbrella of UFBR’s project ‘ Dance for Life ‘ .

The second phase will see a number of FGD’s conducted within the community. They would be 15 to be precise. There will be five targeted groups of people within the community as shown below.

a) Young people of the ages between 10 and 24 years who will be further subdivided into girls and Boys. 10-14 years, 15-19 years, 20-24 years.

b) Women of the ages 15-35 years further subdivided into groups 15-24 and 25-35 groups of both married and unmarried.

c) Men of the ages 25-35 years further subdivided into groups of both married and unmarried.

d) Marginalised groups where we have disabled people, LGBH and people with special needs within the community. This group deals with special groups of people in the community such as those who have experienced SGBV and sexual diversity.

e) Community Marping for the community leaders, Government leaders, CBO leaders and Church leaders.

At the end of the FGD a report will be written and produced to advice issues of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights in the country. The research results from the FGD will be shared country wide even though these FGD’s will be conducted in Mumias, Loitoktok, Mombasa and Nairobi. The research has been sponsored by WPF and Dutch government to support issues of Body rights and SRHR in Kenya and other African states.

CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP FOR NAIROBITS BY ECABO on 17th and 18th October

NairoBits has partners (Sasol and Ilker) in the Learn for work project and in the past meetings with her networks she met Dutch professionals/universities who helped Sasol and Ilkerin with construction. And in the same breath she sought to find the same treat but this time Dutch professionals in ICT industry. NairoBits concerns were that its concept didn’t fit in that mould of construction and therefore she requested to be linked with a partner within her core business.

NairoBits request for support/partnership was based on the areas of design and development because she worked with Joomla, PHP and MYSQL when making CMS websites. If there was a possibility to have a relevant linkage with school/professionals that did this kind of works, it would be more relevant to learn from each other as this was within what she did.

As a result of these prior meetings NairoBits is hosting ECABO who is the Dutch ‘Centre of Expertise on Vocational Education, Training and Labour Market’ for the economic/administrative, ICT and security professions. It is recognised by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and a major proportion of its statutory tasks are funded by the government of Dutch. ECABO will be facilitating a design and development workshop attended by NairoBits training staff for two days. The workshop will be conducted within the facilities of NairoBits from morning to evening.

Course one graduation is a round the corner exactly on the 2^nd of Sept 2011. At total of 100 students will be graduating at the St. Teresa hall in Eastleigh. This will then be followed up by a picnic at the Arboretum on the 3^rd of September 2011. In this picnic we shall talk about business club and the practice of saving.

Recruitment drive: Usually, third and fourth quotas experience dry spell of students into the program. Therefore NairoBits needs to start recruiting in earnest. This should start on the 22^nd of August 2011.

CBO workshop: We shall host a CBO workshop/meeting on the 24^th of August 2011. The program outlining the workshop/meeting will be out soonest next week on 16^th August 2011. The venue will NairoBits main center while the theme would be ‘Conducting Monitoring and Evaluation’

Focused Group Discussion and Excursion at Karura Forest on the 17^th of September 2011. The theme of the FGD would be ‘business club formation and savings’ .A program and a budget for the day is expected by 19^th August 2011. Students will contribute Kshs 500 to the FGD kitty and NairoBits will top up the deficit of the budget.

We recently hosted our supporting partner companies at the GoDown Arts centre for a session of breakfast meeting. The quest was to find out the relevance of our programs in the ICT and Multimedia industry, one industry that is dynamic and steadfastly growing everyday. No one was better placed to give this kind of feedback other than the high flying ICT and Multimedia companies that absorbs our interns into their organizations for professional experience and more so for a possibility of employment.

We sat in an open environment and dialogued through the diverse issues of the industry. Agendas of the meeting touched on conducting a market survey to find out gaps existing in the market; conducting Training needs assessment and incorporating the ICT companies in our lessons plans and curriculum development.

It was then left to NairoBits team to organize itself around the issues and come up with the most practical way of achieving the meetings deliberations.

Two course one picnics were held at the scenic Arboretum both on the 9^th of April and 18^th of June 2011. Interview processes for the next level of our course begins at these open field team building exercises. In the picnic we start identifying the best fit students to move to course two. We test their people skills, team spirit, and softskills within a group environment. Usually we do not announce to the students what we are doing in the background but we are usually keen to find all rounded students who could also do better outside the class environment.

The program usually includes sports for education and so many of team building sports and songs. Always it has been a time to reflect on the entire two months and to bring together all students from our course one centres. This works well as we start preparing them for a single class that is course two and three. Also, it has been a session for healing for both the trainers and the students; a time, to forget all the rough patches that prevailed in the training environment.

First NairoBits had graduation for the various courses in different centres: It was a full house as 120 course one students graduated on the 17^th of June at Eastleigh. These were students drown from the five course one centres namely YIKE, Majimazuri, Diligent, KCYP and Muyog.

Secondly, on the 24^th June 2011 NairoBits graduated 125 students in one of the biggest graduation since the founding year of 2000.These were the cream de’ la cream of NairoBits training. In their midst there were 50 Medialab students from the main training centre, 15 Medialab students from the TDH sponsored Mukuru Kwa Reuben centre and another 60 course two and three students from the FHOK centre.

Other graduations took place in Kampala-KampaBits (http://www.kampabits.org) and Musoma in Tanzania (http://www.musomainformationcenter.blogspot.com.).

In the remote areas of Musoma in Tanzania we successfully trained a total of 15 students through course two and three who graduated on the 17th of June. Another 20 students graduated from the KampaBits centre in Muyenga estate in Kampala. This was the first time ever, to have a Medialab graduation in this city of Kampala. The graduates were so impressive with their skill so much so that 10 of them acquired internship the same day during that ceremony. And such is the power of education.

We had an awesome googleriffic day recently when Google team visited our training center at NairoBits. It was an exchange program that was meant to expose the Google team to the environment of developing countries. For our just graduated students it was a moment of learning what it takes to make it big in the ICT and Multimedia industry. We shared earth moving stories that were narrated by individuals from both Google and NairoBits. What seemed similar were the challenges each one had to surmount to make to the Multimedia and design industry. We had a story of a young man who was once a mason working in a construction site in Argentina to make a living. Everyday he would study anything about computer programming and designing after work .One day a friend wanted a website for his small scale enterprise and he offered to make it for him. He completed the website one of the finest website his friend had ever come across.

It was right then that he realised he had a passion for ICT which he later pursued in a university through sponsorship. The rest was history as he became the best in his class and subsequently attracted the attention of Google.

This story resonates well with the stories of so many of the youth we train. They hail from informal settlements where they are sometimes the head of the families, or sometimes they are forced to do menial jobs that do not pay well and sometimes they just stay within the estates doing nothing. This extreme idleness has made many to wonder into drug dens and illegal gangs for survival.

To share the power of education through such stories shone light and acted cornerstones for courage and motivation for self improvement and personal development. We therefore thank you Google for taking your time to let your staff members share a day with us, a day of inspiration motivation and encouragement.

On the 26th March 2011,we had an Educational trip at Paradise lost for all the Medialab,course two and three students.

We sought to promote positive formation of self; positive relationships; healthy habits; good communication skills; and, positive attitudes and behavior. By so doing, these courses addressed health related problems; school and college dropout rates; crime and deviant behavior; abuse and exploitation; limited participation and lack of opportunities; and, environment conservation. MUSOMA!!! WHAT A TOWN!

This is such a town! From the onset of things you will be fooled to take it for a primitive and a remote town. You would quickly suggest it is a rural market with backward people.

But how wrong would you be?

It is a town where you will packed in a Daladala (Matatu/Cab) like Sardine in a sack, greeted as uncle and women would bow respectfully. It is mostly dominated by missionary institutions even though few indigenous are religious. I believe there is freedom of worship as you will find ardent staunch believers of varied religion. And it seems everything here is three hours ride away.

If there are any reasons making this town such a factor, then it would not miss any of these:-

ZERO- ZERO (MAKUTANO JUNCTION)
This junction has nothing but a de ad petrol station, a coca cola kiosk and some scanty Daladala touts hawking Yoghurt and bread to travelers. It is a unique junction because it supplies Sirari Border, Mwanza, Tarime, Serengeti,na mikoa mengine mbali mbali.

BUTIAMA (NYERERE”S HOME TAFT)
On your way to Musoma, just after Bunda you will be shown and told lots of stories about Nyerere’s humble beginning and about his simple home area. He was the founding president of the nation famed for the Ujamaa policy.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Famously known for her wild life is an open wide national park dominated by a league of wild animals. You will come across such instructions as ‘Nimarufuku Kulisha Wanyama wa hifadhi hili na hatua kali itachukuliwa kwa Yule atae kiuka hamri hii’

BWERI (STENDI MPYA YA MUSOMA)
This is the Musoma Bus stand. It is ten Kilometers out of the Musoma town and all the public vehicle from outside Musoma are allowed to Park.

ZIWA LA VICTORIA
The breath taking lake Victoria‘s water wash the shores of Musoma. It is in Musoma that the iconic and old Mgobero port resides. The Tanzania’s government is currently renovating this port expecting the high end business activities to flow from the neighboring countries.

CLUB NEXT LEVEL
It is right within the heart of Musoma town on the same street with the Barclays bank. In this club the DJ seems to be acquainted with scratching skills though he predominantly sticks on playing music of the 90’s as these are favorite with the night time revelers patronizing this club. Occasionally you will hear local hits but I never quite enjoyed love ballads on the dance floor that much.

AIR STRIP
There is a half murram half tarmac landing strip that serves at least two planes per day; one in the morning and the other in the evening. Well if you are looking for a sun burn then definitely this is a must visit town. On an ordinary day the sun would be doing over 40 c and that would be under a shade of a tree.
You can as well avoid the Mututho laws as locals and visitors sip away Kili and Serengeti brews in the local estate Pubs freely regardless of the time of the day and night. It is also a common sight to spot these people on phone chatting with friends families on either Zantel, Voda, Airtel networks.

THE UP COMING CHINESE SUPER HIGHWAY ALL THE WAY FROM MWANZA
At the time of the Musoma Visit the Tanzania’s government had been engaged in massive clearance of the road reserves in preparation for the development of a super highway all the way from Mwanza by the Chinese company.

NAIROBITS’S MUSOMA INFORMATION CENTER WITHIN MUSOMA COMMUNITY CENTER
We are aware the best design companies both in Mwanza and Musoma to be Barmedas and Sign warehouse limited located in Ghana Street in Mwanza. They deal with digital printing, engraving works, illuminated light boxes, T-shirt and caps branding. These companies have less decorated in house designers and developers who would place these companies in the design map.

We think the establishment of NairoBits’ Musoma Info Center could have never come at an opportune time. This center will supply Tanzania’s design and development industry with the much needed creativity and man power.

When coming from Musoma or going to Musoma please avoid Mombasa Raha at all costs. Be sure these buses are a short form of going to the next level without resisting. They are recklessly driven by careless or super intoxicated drivers cum conductors (touts) from Musoma to Nairobi as they load and off load customers freely along the journey.

FIRST GRADUATION AT MUSOMA INFORMATION CENTER

Sometime back the first group of course one students began classes in Musoma Info Center on the 8th of February 2011.We began with 15 students (nine girls and six boys) from different Community Based Organizations around Musoma town because we only had 15 computers available in the training center from our limited resources that allowed us to do it at one go.

We forged forward with the fifteen students despite the fact that there was an overwhelming back log of desperate disadvantaged youth from marginalized area in this town yarning to enroll and get skilled in ICT and Multimedia field.

Now one month later we are graduating budding designers and developers from the remote rural areas of Musoma like Mtaa Kuja, Makoko, Nyasho, Mikirira, Biafra, Mazambi and Bwale .For group of peasant youth who had never had a chance to use a computer before, it was so overwhelming to watch them present magnificent posters, CD covers and business cards designs. Through such graduation ceremonies we evaluate the levels of a student’s confidence and presentation skills. We also take the same chance to assess and rank the students in terms of accomplishment and readiness to proceed to the next course level.

CBO WORKSHOP AT MUSOMA INFORMATION CENTER

We closely work with CBO’s who partner with self help groups to provide interventions that impact youth from “Mazingira Magumu” as is said in Tanzania. Working with self help groups can sometimes be challenging owing to the dynamic nature behind which they are established. Few of these self-help groups survive beyond one year and most succumb to misappropriation of funds, or in fighting between the memberships. In real sense problems that face these projects are numerous. What we realize, these problems can be minimized if people residing in the informal settlements are coached through governance and management skills. There are countless benefits to having a proper governance structure and management system in place. For instance it is so easy to outsource for funds from the ever stringent donors’ community, it is easy to attract competent personnel to steer the organization to the next level, resources even though meager would be shared and managed well and many more benefits.

By holding the Governance and management workshop in Musoma Information center on the 28th of February and 1st of March 2011 we were hoping to achieve the following objectives.
Objectives of the workshop were as follows:-
1. To strengthen the Governance of the partnering CBO’s.
2. To strengthen the Management practices of the partnering CBO’s.
3. To revisit NairoBits recruitment policies

Briefly, we looked at differences between good governance and bad governance and even drew comparison to what is happening in the Middle East where regimes are being thrown out office for having overstayed their mandate for too long. We looked at the good systems as those found in other places of the world like America and compared with our own African states where incumbent keep twisting systems and institutions to keep them in office at any cost. We then narrowed these examples to our very own CBO’s governance within the community level.

We delved in management issues such as leadership styles, management functions such as planning, organizing, controlling and leading and how all these impacted the actions of an organization positively or negatively. We learnt that there were 14 principles of management namely:- Division of work, Authority, Responsibility, Discipline, Unity of direction, Unity of Command, Remuneration of personnel, Centralization, Scalar chain, Order, Fayol and Espirit principles.

This was the first capacity building workshop designed to build CBO’s working with the Musoma Information center in Tanzania. The two day workshop was well attended by the targeted partners who included:-Watoto Wapinge Ukimwi, Pastoral Diocese Department (PDD), St. Anthony Vocational Training center, Community Alive, Mji wa Huruma, Umoja wa Maendeleo wa Mukwaya(UMMABU), and Jipemoyo.

Apart from facilitating discussions on good governance and good management practices in this workshop, we did CBO capacity Assessment on the same aspects. It was emerging that there has been a lot of intervention in the offing for issues as child right, child abuse, the girl child but not as much emphasis on governance and management.

As we closed the workshop, agreed that the next CBO workshop to be held on the 19th of May 2011 as had been scheduled on the work-plan by the project manager. The participants suggested that NairoBits provide capacity building and training on the following topical issues: Participatory leadership, Communication in management, capacity building as a concept and ICT.

Always, during monitoring and evaluation exercises NairoBits is taken to task to answer how the community and the parents are involved in the program’s interventions.Where the said meeting was held on the February 12th, 2011 at the Go-Down Arts center from 10:00am to 12:30pm. In this meeting we expected to remind the parents about their obligations and to outline various ways through which they would contribute to the program. Usually, parents are expected to provide moral support to the youth attending the program through providing fare, lunch, commitment fee, and through attending events and graduations hosted by donors, partners or NairoBits upon request. The parents are also allowed to monitor the program, students and CBO’s to ensure that we provide services we are mandated to provide without favour or biasness.

NairoBits general information
We described in details what NairoBits was and when it was established .We also took time to explain the successes the organization has witnessed since inception and what we were expecting to realize in the next coming years. Parents hailed the meeting as very informative as many of them were discovering so much about NairoBits and the students at large.

NairoBits course structure
We also took time to elaborately walk the parents through the NairoBits course structure. In this explanation we sought to explain to the parents our procedure of work from the time we recruit a young person, to course one, course two and three, media lab and then finally when a student becomes an Alumni. We explained at length why we usually drop some students along the course and what levels of skills these young persons walk away with at the end of the entire course.

NairoBits relationship with CBO’s
Parents were interested in knowing how we recruit students into the program. It was not very clear for them that we only recruit from the CBO’s that partner with us. In the process of defining how we get our students, we began explaining our partnership with CBO’s as well.

It became clear that an interested youth must join a community youth group that partner with us in order to benefit from the system. And that the youth must be pro active in implementing the organizational duties prior to selection to NairoBits. It is only from this youth organization that the youth can be proposed or suggested to NairoBits for the program. We urged parents to keep posting their children to the youth groups as a way of developing the community as well as to enable them stand a chance of benefiting from programs like the one offered by NairoBits.

Issues on commitment fees
Parents expressed their wish of having the chance to pay commitment fees in bits as opposed to once in a lump sum format. They said it was a real challenge for them to acquire such huge amount of money at a go. Some said what we ask for as commitment fee was sometimes twice the house rent they pay in the community.

Of course after listening to their wishes we explained why it was important to pay as we asked and for such arrangements as paying in bits were only possible but not to all the parents based on past experiences when collecting such fee.

Parents role
Parents were informed to be proactive in the lives of their children. As much as NairoBits was struggling to find internship positions for the graduates, it was a responsibility left for parents to satisfy. NairoBits was not in a position to post all the students given the nature of the diminishing job market in Kenya and the expansion strategies it was taking. Our major task was to provide ,cheaply, skills and knowledge necessary to make youth competitive in the ICT market.

There are petty charges that sometimes come up during the program such as picnic fee and others that may be determined as need a rises .It was our plea that the parents corporate with the students if such requests were to feature. Parents also asked NairoBits to be providing them with adequate information, in advance, on such instances so as to help them plan and assist.

We asked parents to insist on the past students giving back to the CBO’s as well as the self help groups. This was the only way through which the community would develop from the skills the students acquire from NairoBits programs such as ICT,SRH(Reproductive Health), Lifeskills and Entrepreneurship.

WAY FORWARD
Parents were provided with all the necessary contacts and as such it is expected that they will use the contacts to facilitate communication to and from NairoBits. They were also shown the responsible persons at all levels to communicate with in future.

SRH WORKSHOP

We are in the process of sensitizing the CBO partners about SRH (sexual and Reproductive Health program) program and its implementation within the community. The sensitization training will take place in two phases: In the first phase of a two day workshop we shall train the CBO representatives and in the second phase of training we shall target two peer educators/trainers per center from the same CBO’s or the partner’s organizations.

NairoBits trains so many youth through the SRH per year. We have reports that once trained these young persons lack support from the community and the CBO organization on how to keep living within the recommended SRH standards. Therefore we have taken the initiative to bridge that gap by providing the requisite skills required by both the CBO and the community to assist such youth through this SRH workshop.

The training which is meant to equip the both the CBO leaders and peer educators with skills of handling sexual and reproductive health matters would be facilitated by an SRH expert. And the objective is to have program support back in the community level for the students who have acquired the SRH skills. These set of people would from time to time provide SRH assistance to the trained youth even long after training is done.

The SRH workshop scheduled to start on the 23rd, 24th ,1st and 2nd of February and March 2011 respectively would be for training World Start with Me to Peer-Educators and Community based leaders from the following centers: Muyog in Thome area, FHOK in Eastleigh, Diligent in Kayole, MajiMazuri in Mathare, Mukuru in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, KCYP in Kibera and YIKE in Kariobangi North.

It has been a long time comming now but finaly we managed to beat all odds, pit falls and traps to commence training activities in this center.This would be the third center set up outside Kenya under the auspices of MamaBits'(The franchise branch of NairoBits)brands of centers after the now famous AdisBits and KampaBits.

It has been our mission to bridge the digital divide in these areas where many youth reside but without access to education,technology and information.And for sure it will be an elephant task to train youth in Musoma because of the low levels of English language that is a common affair in all sectors of life.This is a swahili speaking nation where the syllubus and curriculum has been delivered in Swahili from the elementary level save for the high schools.To the students this does not hold much ground as they believe they are able to cope with the basic skills in English.

We have invested 15 super fast machines in this resource center that will host 15 students per sitting within the Matumaini Kwa Vijana center(MCC).This is a first kind of a center to be put up in Musoma a town that borders lake Victoria.We forsee so many young people abandoning fishing activities to aggressively persue education in ICT and Multimedia skills. And for a group of students who never had a chance to use computers or exploit the internet opportunities,this is a nother new lease in life.It is a new begining beacuse many confesed coming from poor families who could barely afford basic needs.Some said they never had a meaningful chance of attending either a college or university.

A lot of credit goes to the TDH(Terre Des Hommes)organization that has sponsored Mukuru kwa Reuben,KampaBits,and MusomaBits centers.It is through the grant and donations that the Dutch organization provided to NairoBits for establishement of the centers that we have been able to come up with such mega information and resource centers outside Kenya.

It is hard to tell what future holds for such innovative initiatives and interventions that depends on goodwill from the donor community but what we are sure about is that someone's life will one day change for better because they had contact with one of these centers.We are also sure that cutting edge technologies will keep popping up in the ICT sectors while more and more desperate youth will keep lagging behind because of lack of skills or opportunity to persue such technological advancement and opportunities.

IYF visits FHOK on the 4th February 2011

We were paid a courtesy call by Our main Donors IYF.Colleen,Cate,Cate and Peter came down to meet the NairoBits course two and three students at the FHOK center in Eastleigh and to have a Focused Group Discussion with this group of youth.They were on a mission to find out: the most important issues young persons in Kenya feel should be addressed,what the youth are excited about,and what the youth are worried about.

They say they have been doing similar Focused Group discussions in different parts of the world this year to collect information to be used to advise governments on the programs to provide for the youth in the year 2011 and beyond.

IYF thematic areas include working with organizations focusing on employability and entrepreneurship,education outside school like FGDs,Citizenship like education on rights,Technology and technological skills dissemination,Learning or Education and Health.IYF has over the years cultivated the culture of working with transparent Non Governmental organizations.They also insist on accountability,skill acquisition and skill delivery,reaching out to people who make a difference,supporting people who who work with youth as their primary target group.Currently IYF works in 70 different countries around the world in partnership with different like minded organizations.

The focused group discussion they conducted had the following questions:
What excites you about being a citizen of Kenya?
The Kenyan youth felt excited about:being involved,living in a peaceful country,recognition of youth in Kenya,access to rights like education,they were excited about free education,free movement,free water supply in the ghettos/slums.

What do you think could be better in Kenya?
Youth wish for more employment opportunities,more opportunity for education,better leadership without the blemish of corruption and insist on having youth filling in the leadership spaces.They are still concerned with narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor to manageable levels through availing resources,getting more platform for innovation supported by political achievement.They wish for more youth resource centers like the one we have in partnership between FHOK and Nairobits to be established not only for the urban youth but also for the youth in the rural areas.It was also interesting to observe that they had an urge of having an improved standards of living that is backed by access to good health centers,more tertiary education opportunities and justice for all. They were sorry that the police were still practicing extra judicial killings and extensively harassing them even with the new constitution in place.This has,according to them,made them flee through the nearest exit whenever they spot a police officer rather than collaborate with the police force to combat crime.

Are youth politically and socially informed in Kenya?
Youth are politically engaged in Kenya but in the wrong sense.It was observed regrettably that most of the youth are usually used to fuel political chaos by the politicians instead of involving them in constructive development programs. Youth in this forum wished for the full implementation of the new constitution to the letter and to the word of the law.They also reiterated that they would like to have an objective political space with adequate and correct information for increased participation.

Are the health services available youth friendly?
Unanimously ,it was observed that public hospitals were not as youth friendly as the private institutions or social organizations. It was felt that for a center or institution to qualify as youth friendly it had to encompass the following: Must have youth running the programs ,must be confidential,must have resources ,services be delivered fast enough,must have relaxed settings,must provide a variety of services, must employ several modes of communications targeting youth,must have a youthful environment.

What are the places a visitor in Kenya should try and what kind of music would you recommend?
Youth in the FGD suggested a visit to Ghettos,Coast, Mathare slums and Kibera.As for music, local gigs would suffice with big names like punit group,Juliani and Ken Wamaria being featured in the list.Be sure to sample a lot of reggea tunes down in the Ghetto.

Training Of Trainers workshop on Lifeskills

We have been implementing Lifeskills and employability curriculum within course one , course two and three programs. The curriculum is meant to equip our graduates with the soft-skills required in the work place. These skills are very important for the graduates whose particular backgrounds have been in the informal settlements where such valuable virtues lack. For example we train on Work ethics, job application and preparation,how to prepare for an interview , learning to keep professional distance in work place, working in teams, taking initiative, communication and follow ups, relating well with colleagues in the work environment, and phone etiquette.

To equip the trainers who deliver the IYF curriculum,we are hosting a life-skills workshop from the 14th to 18th February 2011 at the Go Down art center. This workshop that will involve all the trainers and staff members will be facilitated by Learn For Work team from Holland. Tentatively we shall be joined by Sasol team from Kitui on the same training dates subject to their confirmation.

In the spirit of team work we had a staff party going down at Sheeben on the 17th Dec 2010. The person of the moment was the general manager who apart from steering us through the successful year , she also gave us the general view of the year that was. In her observation we had done fine though there were plenty of room for improvements in line with professionalism ,time management and the pending businesses.

It was quite interesting to note that the general staff outlook has grown from the slim eight members to bulging sixteen. The growth was greatly attributed to the expansion of programs into the community areas where majority of the new staff members work as Community based trainers and volunteers.

It was a well deserved break for all staff members.

During this time of the year we have so many school leavers searching for opportunities and spaces in collages and universities. A handful of them are sure of places within the tertiary institution but majority are left to fumble with high cost of fee through parallel degrees or expensive substandard training institutions. The situation get worse when we move into the informal settlements where hundreds of school leavers have no chances for entry into the collages or universities due to known reasons. Some of them can barely afford the fees charged in these institutions,others are plagued with issues like early marriages,drugs related complications, lack of information on opportunities and generally all the elements of youth vulnerability in the informal settlements.

These high school leavers are usually eager to keep themselves busy given the amount of time they have in hand especially after a stringent schedule we have in high schools. If left loose and not engaged they slowly progress into social misfit behaviors that have been a common feature of our slums.

As an NGO working in the field of ICT(Multimedia and design) we have golden opportunities for such fresh graduates who have no opportunities and reside in the informal settlements. Each year we are funded by our supportive donors like Kinder Not Hilfe (KNH),Samsung Real Dreams,IYF,Turin foundation,EU and Terre Des Hommes to provide skills ,knowledge and information on opportunities to these youth.

We have course one students recruitments scheduled for January,March,June,and September for this year. So far we have just registered 130 school leavers into our program for the first quarter of 2011.We are encouraging more youth to keep registering for this rear life changing opportunity. Amongst the skills they will acquire during this quota are ICT and design,Soft skills and entrepreneurship.

Media Lab Interviews

When history is one day counting down the best web design schools, Nairobits comes to the picture with its big impact it has in the community, on the grounds that have been in existence for the last decade in Kenya, Nairobits will definitely be on the list.
Marking new beginning this year, with every step we make towards reaching our objective in teaching and improving the lifestyle of youths in ICT.
Nairobits conducted its first interview of the year, for the highly prestigious class of the media lab, where 50 youths will benefit to learn web design and development and thus contribute to the well being of this industry in our country.

Equipped with the relevant skills in course 2 class, dubbed (Design), even made it hard for the trainers to scrutinize the students, which places this class on a good start of understanding.
The process went well and as student’s expectation, to be amongst the chosen few, to fill the 50 spot in the class, so are we committed to be with them through this journey and equip them in best way we’ve being doing it for the past 10years.

Currently Nairobits has six informational centers, namely

1) Family Health Options (FHOK)
2) Yike
3) Maji mazuri
4) KCYP
5) Diligent
6) Marurui

That spread across Nairobi for easily facilitation of their studies in the first two courses of the curriculum.
The interview of these classes’ stages will be taking place on this week too, as there classes will resume as from next week on 24th January.

Trainers planning workshop

This was a workshop held and attended by all NairoBits training and staff team. It was a whole day –one week workshop held from 11th to 14th January 2011 within the Go-Down Arts Center precincts. The objectives of the workshop were amongst the following: harmonizing programs and projects calendar, analysing the year that was and also making sure communication channels are put in place The workshop encompassed all the NairoBits staff members, MamaBits staff and community Based trainers (CBT).We had an in-house workshop with the facilitation done by the trainers themselves

Several committees were born out of this workshop such as the Alumni committees, On-line presence teams. These committees would be the pedestal upon which projects and programs would be delivered.

GOVERNANCE WORKSHOP

NairoBits focuses on empowering the CBO organizations that she works with from the informal settlements. We just concluded a Governance and Management workshop held at the GoDown- Arts-center where we hosted almost 15 representatives from across the informal settlements within Nairobi. We engaged our partners through a TNA (training Needs Assessment) to know what governance issues could emerge from the workshop as well as look at the training gaps that existed.

What is in it for our CBO partners?

Our future plans are steadfastly anchored on the strong support we received from both the donor world and the CBO partners. Donors such as IYF, Samsung, EU, Terre Des Homme, Edukans and Educaids have constantly financed our programs so that we offer free education to the disadvantaged youth from the slums. Our partners stand to benefit from the broad influence we command through publicity within the East Africa through initiatives such as KampaBits, MusomaBits in Tanzania, ZanziBits, and AddisBits. We are also accredited by one of the best design colleges in Holland RocA12 even though in the circles of our interventions we offer programs that sit well in the domain of Vocational learning.

The main objective of this workshop was to sensitize the CBO’s on the good practices of governance and management as emphasized by established sound organization that implement the recommended UN standards. While highlights of the workshop were the discussion forums where we shared points on Governance and management challenges we all faced within our diverse organizations. From these discussions it emerged that our partners needed more skills empowerment on how to: do strategic planning, effective financial reporting, and mobilization of resources, effective follow-up structures through tracer surveys or monitoring and evaluations.

In this workshop we also took time to share the MGD awards we won with the CBO partners. The award was for the category of the Youth Empowerment agenda eight in the Millennium development goals. NairoBits won the award for being the leading organization in this category for having changed the lives of so many youth through the ICT and multimedia design programs that equipped youth with hands-on skills knowledge and opportunities such as jobs, internships, micro credit enterprises, and Business incubation or business processing centers. As to this MDG awards achievement they all appreciated the collective effort that has been the hall mark of the NairoBits–CBO partnership we have had for years now.

This was a learning event hosted by NairoBits.For many who attended the event it was their maiden day to the 14 falls.To say the very least we were not disappointed at all.In these magnificent 14 falls we had much fun and lots to share.We discussed SRH,Entrepreneurship,and Lifeskills issues that affect the youth especially those coming form the informal settlement in Nairobi. Thereafter we had several team building games,food,fun,laughter and much more.

On the 27th November 2010 we shall be celebrating NairoBits 10th anniversary.It will a day to mark 10 good years of service to the youth from the informal settlements within Nairobi.Indeed we have been a power house in training the Youth from the informal settlement in Creative Multimedia skills and design no wonder we were recognized by the Millennium Development Goal committee for being the best organization towards the implementation of youth empowerment agenda.

Mukuru Kwa Reuben Launch

In the spirit of partnership, a multimedia organization NairoBits Trust and a child rights organization Terre des Hommes came together to provide intervention to the youth from the informal settlements that makes up the Nairobi’s slums. Terre des Hommes had specialized in providing resources while NairoBits had specialized in implementing the program activities that would saw the initiation of KampaBits, MusomaBits and Mukuru Kwa Reuben center.

The Reuben center which perfectly sits in a 40 feet container has been hailed as one of the modest centers to be created by NairoBits and her donors in the recent months. In its lavish interior a legion of 42 upcoming and budding designers from the lowly neighbourhood of Mukuru Kwa Reuben are slowly getting woven into the legendary designers and developers NairoBits is known for amongst her peers in the design and multimedia industry.

Given the massive investments, it would be a reap off not to celebrate this center of a land mark stature within the Mukuru slums. Therefore, on the 24th September 2010 a host of sponsors, students and interested parties will be joining NairoBits and Reuben Center in celebrating the launch of the Mukuru ICT center.

14 Falls Focused Group Discussion and Picnic

The third quarter Focused Group Discussion will this time take place at the magnificent 14 falls off Thika town on the 4th of September 2010. All the NairoBits students of all cadres of highly trained multimedia professionals are eligible to attend. The event will heavily lean on discussing life skills, listening to a motivational speaker about honing entrepreneurial skills and playing team building exercises.

1.Life-skills skits: You are a job seeker. Demonstrate how you would acquire a job of your dreams.
2.Sexual Reproductive health Debate: “Love and Money. Which one would you go for? ”
3.Entrepreneurship Motivational Speech: “No matter how much you plan, the action point is always the count.” (importance of implementing your plans)
4.Team Building: Games, Competition and much more.

Invitation for Nairobits CBO capacity building workshop

Last year November 16th we had a prosperous capacity building workshop attended by all the CBO representatives. In this event we mapped ways forward meant to meet the dynamic and now ever changing situation of the social work arena, donor perspectives and requirements, as well as contemporary organizational service delivery strategies to the target groups.

As a result of that, we would like to invite you to a one day follow up workshop to be held on Tuesday 25th May 2010 from 9.30am to 3.30pm at Nairobits.
This will be our second capacity building workshop where many emerging topics will be covered. It will be a learning experience for all of us and a workshop that each organization should not miss.

Behind the screens Graduation
On the 9th April 2010 one hundred and fifty students will be graduating. They shall show case course work they have been working on for the last ten weeks. This event will take place at Eastleigh’s St.Teresa church under the auspices of FHOK center.

Entrepreneurship Graduation
This has been scheduled for the 12th April 2010 at the GoDown Arts centers. We expect to witness an exhibition of 150 enterprise projects. Normally this course will train the participants on the intricate issues of managing an enterprise. We also insist on using local available resources in operating our enterprises. After two weeks of Theory in class the participants follow it with three months of implementation and business start up.

Sambaza Peace launch
On the 20th March 2010 we are rolling out training of Sambaza Peace and GetH2O.In all centers with exception to Majimazuri, we shall be training on Saturdays. We expect a sitting capacity of at least 25 participants per session. In the morning hours we shall focus on the thematic modules of Sambaza Peace while in the afternoon we shall play the GetH2O board game. All the trained TOT’s are requested to apply for these positions.

Course 1 recruitment in all CBO centers.
On the 24th March 2010, we shall be recruiting more students for the course one program.This follows the space created by the graduation of the current students. All the partnering CBO’s are requested to post their students for the interviews.

International Planned Parenthood Federation

Today we were privileged to have some officials from the IPPF , who paid us a visit at FHOK . It was a great honour to meet them , some of whom included the African Regional Officer , Mr. Leonard Maseko Zondesta from swaziland who is the technical advisor for youth and adolescents and Dr. Balla Moussa Diedhiou from Gabon who is the Director Executive .The representative members have been meeting in a conference in the country since Saturday , which ends today at 6.00pm .
The organization is an international body constituting of 44 African member countries some of which include : Kenya , Swaziland , Namibia , Senegal , Niger ,Malawi , Ethiopia , Burundi , Rwanda , DRC , Mozambique , Guinea Bissau among other countries . IPPF is the main donor for FHOK . It focuses on funding more projects and activities for FHOK , which was the main agenda for the conference they are currently having .
They love Kenyan people and say that we are quite friendly . Apart from that they appreciate the fact that the Kenyan government is indeed helping such organizations . We welcome them back to our country . Nairobits fraternity wishes you a safe trip back home .

On 10`th march 2010 , the family health options Kenya centre had a visitor from Polland by the name Andrzy Pyzik who does master economic. He has also done a basic PHP,HTML and graphics design.
He is involved in a number of FHOK activities.
He is here for internship posted by the IESEC . It turns out that he enjoys the Kenyan climate , Kenyan food and most of all the Kenyan people . He indeed , is a friendly person , we had fun talking to him .

THE ICE_BREAKEAKER

The start of a new school year , term or semester presents a challenging task for teachers , trainers and group leaders . Students are eager to meet and make new friends , but often lack the social skills to do so independently . So as the the Nairobits fraternity we found out that one way to facilitate social interaction is by spending sometime playing some relaxed , low_key , icebreaking games done during interactive outings such as picnics . Through this , students are indeed forced to interact.
On February 21`st 2010 courses 2 and 3 students from Nairobits went on a picnic at the Arboretum park in Nairobi . Students met at the Hilton hotel early that morning , where from they headed to the park . At the park they had fun by taking part in a wide range of fun and challenging outdoor activities such as , debates , challenge rope courses , fun games just to name but a few .
The debates that they had concentrated more on topics such as love , sex , money and drug abuse among the youth. Such debates help in creating awareness among the youth , thus empowering them into curbing such social vices.
The students had their time and they really enjoyed themselves fully . In a way it broke the `classroom monotony` . All these were made possible by our good trainers Mr. Victor , Mr. ELi and Miss Eunice , we thank them for their care and concern for us.

Our Groups!

Yesterday was women’s day and we did celebrate the lives of our mothers, daughters, sisters and had a reason to be proud of them for being part of us in this planet. One most important theme that should have been passed across to women should have been team work. We seriously believe in the power of a team to build bridges, mountains and skies. In a group we motivate others and build on our weaknesses to be better another day. Groups have been the corner stone of what NairoBits is today. We recruit our target group of youth from community groups. We also form our training model around groups. We form groups of partnership as we approach our donors and we implement our objectives in groups. And in groups we find our strength to succeed.

We are entities that form one-NairoBits. Several information centers forms the larger group that posts their students to NairoBits and so many multimedia enterprises are born out of groups that are funded by the Micro Finance Institutions.

We meet in focused group discussions to focus, to predict, to correct, to share and educate our selves. In the recently concluded debate and picnic that took place on the 20th February at the Arboretum, we talk extensively about drug abuse. In the groups of twenty people, 84 youth converged and agreed drug abuse was on the increase. Amongst the several reasons for the increase were peer pressures, ignorance, availability of drugs, and ineffective campaigns

Interventions
Drug abusers advised to seek for counseling, recommendation to up root all the drug barons who supply these drugs, if you have never tried and tasted drugs please do not start.

We share our space in the class and work as a team behind a common goal.

We give opportunities to all as we sit and listen in groups within both the slum areas and the Nairobits Headquarter at the GoDown Art Center.

FHOK Centre

The FHOK is a youth center based in Eastleigh.It offers a number of vocational training to empower the young people some of which include Binti Africa that trains young women thus a source of empowerment to them. They offer them computer training, tailoring and catering courses, beauty & hairdressing. Moreover,there is a gymnasium in the center where young men attend to keep fit. Through this, a number of young men make a living out of it by weight_lifting .
NAIROBITS DIGITAL DESIGN SCHOOL is situated within the center offering digital training courses to young , innovative youths from different areas in Nairobi.
Within which courses two & three take place.A total of 60 students partake their training course there . Half of the students take their classes in the morning and the rest in the afternoon.Students are given projects to work on specifically on webdesign

Sambaza Peace program!

Sambaza Peace is an interactive digital and mobile learning program (cross media) that teaches and works with young people in Kenya. The main objective of this program is to develop a culture of peace amongst young people by providing them with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed for harmonious co-existence and non-violent living.
Through the program young people learn to communicate their needs, prevent escalation of violence, enhance their self esteem, negotiate with family friends and community and school for their betterment in an assertive and peaceful way.
The project emphasizes the need to use new and innovative approaches to engage young people who are important change agents. Young people are particularly vulnerable to crime and violence both as victims and perpetrators, and they are also important resources in finding effective solutions.
Elements of Sambaza Peace
• A cartoon based lesson program including games, activities and discussions, via internet;
• Sambaza Peace on cd-rom, the same as this website but then without internet connection
• A board game called Geth2o, which can be played as part of the lesson program or stand alone
• A facebook group for discussions and spreading the word

Target group
Sambaza Peace is made for out of school youth from 15-22, boys and girls and from various backgrounds.

Development phases
We have been working hard across two continents since last October and the results are here, we have four cartoons and lessons live, the rest are in the pipeline. The board game is also ready called Geth2o (Get water) and the accompanying Mobile game is also nearly ready for launch.
Now it is time to pilot the program and to find out what the Kenyan youth thinks about this program!

Role of the CBO/info centre
We need the full assistance of the CBO where the info centre is hosted. We expect the CBO make their info centre available and will be in charge of the selection of the students with the help of the trainers. If the CBO commits to host the pilot, we ask them to also sign up for hosting the full training, which consist of 10 lessons and the board game and which should be hosted in August for a period of 6-10 weeks.

Pilot phase
The pilot is to be started in the week of (preferably) March 15th, the trainers then start to facilitate the 4 lessons during 2 weeks (2 lessons per week) and they also facilitate the Geth2o board game at least 2 times during this period.

Shantel from Melbourne Australia was in Nairobits to give a talk to our students on how to start a business especially in the web design industry. We recognize that not all the students we train are bent towards seeking or acquiring a white collar job or employment. In many instances some of these students have expressed interest in starting their own enterprises. In line with this realization Shantel came in to share the basics of going it alone or with a possible partner.

She is a web designer who started her own company two years ago in Australia. Having been born in a family of five she has two sisters whom one is a hairdresser and the other one works in a clothes store. She did say that life was not a walk in the park for her even after she began studying computer science degree back in Australia. This prompted her to enroll in design classes and thereafter began working on a part time basis .Later on she discovered that the design industry offered more training and skills in design far much more than college could ever do. She then quit the university to pursue her job.

This lasted for a while. She only worked for eight months then resigned to form her own company of outsourcing and designing. This was aided by the fact that she could make as much money as a free more than her pay check could offer.

Mkuru Kwa Reuben!

We are expectant at the moment and if you have been looking at this space you must have realized that we are conquering all the slums by our state-of-the art training paradigm. We began with Kariobangi and its slum environs in Korogocho,we then seconded this with Mathare and Jua-Kali slum in Thome area. And before the end of year 2008 we began seducing Kibera ,finally nailing her in the early month of 2009.We believe we are not yet done with slums as we are still stretching our able arms to pull Mkuru Kwa Reuben into our brooding basket. Hopefully,it will not be for long before we begin shinning our expertise into Mkuru Slum. And if we ever begin to do so,then Mkuru will witness an exodus into prosperity brought about by concept of web designing as written in our hand book.

We are still Websters but just for changing our paradigm

Before,we had all our training programs executed under one roof. Youth from CBO partners would come from all walks of life to participate in that single and most important entry interview into course one. And if they went through successfully then two months later they would be creating their first websites in course two and three. We would engage these youth in researching through the neighborhood project to find out prevalent problems within their communities or through the cultural project to find out whatever little artifacts existing ,package the information and present it in a nice educative manner.
Then recently, NairoBits began implementing its expansion policies that demanded all the basic course s (behind the screens and Inside the Web) be trained at the information centers while the advanced media-lab courses be taught at the in-house center. We have also continued training youth through web designing courses using our founding curriculum but only this time in a different setting.
All these changes have been for the better. We are now able to post 50 students from media-lab into the job market much more than 20 students we used to graduate before. We are also in a position to touch lives of so many youth much more than we could even before. In course one alone we are envisioning to train, by the end of the first quarter, 150 students through ICT,Entrepreneurship and Life-skills syllabus. This is a milestone achievement from the normal 60 students we used to train before. In course two and three we are churning out 60 students at the end of every half year an improvement from the 30 students we used to coach before within the same period of time.

It is important to understand that as we are receiving 28 new students we are also graduating 28 exiting students who will wait for their graduation scheduled for the 4th Dec 2009 at Majimazuri.

Google Earth Outreach is coming to East Africa!
Google Earth Outreach, the program that helps non-profit and charitable organizations learn to use Google's mapping technology, will be holding two special events for NGOs and public benefit organizations in East Africa in October and November. During both events, participants will hear first-hand from our partners who have used Google Earth as part of their campaigns, explore Google Earth layers created by other public benefit organizations, and learn how to create their own maps with a focus on outreach and advocacy. In the hands-on workshops, charitable and public benefit organizations will learn how to use Google Earth, Google Maps and SketchUp to tell their stories and bring their causes to life. No prior mapping experience is required.

The NGO events will take place on Oct. 30 in Kampala, Uganda at the AfricaGIS conference, and on November 5 in Nairobi, Kenya.

On the 16th October 2009 Edukans will be visiting all the information centers.They have confirmed their attendance and all of us as NairoBits staff,C.B.O partners and member youth are waiting eagerly to receive and share with them.They will be visiting to assess the whole concept of information centers and policies as established by NairoBits and partners.

Information centers as put up have provided efficient services to the youth from informal settlements within the areas of their establishment in Nairobi.They have been relevant platform for providing information and services that the youth from slums would have not received otherwise.These includes provision of skills,knowledge,forums for discussions,resources and information.

On the 25th September we were hosted by the Newly established information center ,Diligent school of hair design at the Nyama villa hall.In the ground breaking graduation ceremony that saw 54 students receive their certificates after nine weeks of E-learning course,200 guests attended and these included parents and friends.In attendance was VIAfrica who had a stand at the entrance to show case their computers,Diligent students hair designers in their trade mark green T-shirt,NairoBits in-house students,C.B.O representatives and NairoBits staff members.

Our Community has been growing and from the three we had initially began with,we have added more to make them six.Previously, the founding C.B.O partners were:YIKE,FHOK,MUYOG.Then, at the beginning of the Year(2009) we stepped-up and partnered with KCYP in Kibera.Presently we are proud to welcome the new members on board.These new members are:
1.Diligent School of Beauty and Hair Design located in Kayole.
2.Majimazuri located in the heart of Mathare slum along Juja Road.

They are all promising as we look forward to touching hundreds of youth lives' within the informal settlements around Nairobi.As a matter of fact,Majimazuri expects to graduate 28 students from their center after having them go through the NairoBits E-learning program - course one - for nine weeks while Diligent graduated 28 in the just concluded graduation on the 25th September 2009.

First, I must say kudos to all the 26 students currently taking course 2 and 3 NairoBits program at FHOK.The classes that began on the 26th of August are administered by James Maina(Afaba) who will take them through 42 modules with the help of Elli Mnuve(Zizou).

This is another first of its own kind of program from NairoBits in partnership with C.B.O's.We will train students through all forms of electronic designs and media just as we do it in-house.In line with this we shall have tentatively stopped offering course one in in-house programs and begin training on the same at the information centers.Consequently ,we shall have more space to produce 50 webmasters and designers to the job market better than the 20 we have been sending in the past.

We shall also encourage all the C.B.O representatives to send their members to the nearest information center which will remain, hence forth, as the only entry point into the top-of-the-range NairoBits ICT courses.

Reporting to the Head of Base, the Logistics Officers will be in charge of the management of all logistics aspects in the base.

o supply chain management including procurements, purchase forecasts,

o Equipment and fleet management including the supervision and
allocation, ensure installations, maintenance and repairs, organise

o the rehabilitation and maintenance of structures in base.
The incumbent will coordinate security and communication at the base

Qualifications & Skills Required
• Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Engineering, Mechanical).
• Demonstrated experience in similar position with at least 2 years
working experience.
• Fluency in English with excellent verbal and written communication
skills.
• Working experience in IT applications, Mechanics, radio and
satellite communications.
• Ability to multitask, handle pressure/stress well, ability to
improvise and flexibility are essential qualities required for this
challenging position.

2. The Young Professionals' Platform for Agricultural Research (YPARD): New Local and Regional Initiatives.
What: YPARD is calling for proposals for individuals and organizations wishing to set up local and regional initiatives. 3. The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM): PhD Scholarships in Dryland Resource Management.

Christian Mission Aid is urgently looking for a Health and Counseling coordinator to work in our HIV/AIDs program in Nyanza District.

General Function/Responsibilities

The vision of CMA through the CLEAR program is to reduce the spread of HIV and mitigate the challenges of AIDS. Our vision is a world in which people do not die of AIDS. Since 1999, the CLEAR project has continued to implement activities which focus on prevention, care, treatment and support under wholistic Home Based Care as well as the mitigation of socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS. In this endeavor, CMA has sensitized over 500,000 people, offered HBC to over 700 PLWAs and supported over 200 affected families by addressing their various needs namely, shelter, health, education, livelihood, water and environmental sanitation.

In seeking to strengthen and consolidate the project gains, the post of HBC and Counseling Coordinator has been created so as to become part of the Home Based Care and Counseling Capacity Building Project whose main purpose is to empower men and women counselors, CBOs, women's groups and CLEAR committees to improve the lives of those rural households most severely affected by HIV/AIDS. The holder of this position will actively participate in the planning and implementation of policy and strategy of the team. S/he will be responsible for managing and providing technical support necessary for the effective implementation of Health and Counseling activities. The project will also use participatory methodologies to identify community perceptions and readiness to move from dependency to self-reliance and use the findings to identify community priorities and specific initiatives that can be supported. The work will entail collaboration with other key stakeholders within the project sites.

Specific Duties

Provide appropriate training/monitoring/supervision to the CLEAR project's team of trained community leaders within the various HBC components: Palliative Care, Nutritional support, psychosocial support, counseling,
Maintain standards for training, practice, record keeping and reporting as outlined by the donor within the prescribed schedule. This is to be done through provision of written monthly report detailing successes and constraints towards achieving goals and plans for the following month, along with all records and/or statistics collected under his/her supervision for that month.
Conduct routine visits so as to provide support to all CLEAR team on medical cases referred by the trained community leaders, or to assist with difficult/complicated HIV/AIDS related opportunistic infections [OI].
Participate in all the programmatic schedules of the health sector namely, nutrition, EPI and related surveys, mass treatment programs, and community outreach as required by the ministry of health as well as other on-site needs.
Meet regularly with counterparts, MoH and other community leaders to discuss the HBC program development, to evaluate local program staff, and to plan future activities to expand upon programs and increase counseling and HBC access to outreach areas.
Keep the Program Manager appraised of all HBC and counseling activities and preempt any difficulties that may arise by suggesting apt mitigation strategies.
In close consultation with the Project Manager, assist in identifying key activities that need to be infused into the grant requests.
To assist with the hosting of various stakeholders e.g. donors, evaluators, government officers, missionaries as well as students on a learning tour during field visits to the project sites where relevant to the CLEAR program.

Education/Knowledge

Diploma in medical sciences/Nursing or Higher National Diploma from a recognized tertiary Institution.
Professional training on counseling
Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and sexual counseling would be an added advantage

Relevant experience on the fundamentals of ARV/ART

OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTHS

CISP (International Committee for the Development of Peoples) is implementing a 15-month pilot project in "Support to the development of a protective environment for the children and adolescents at risk of commercial sexual exploitation in Malindi District", funded by UNICEF.

Within the current project, CISP, in partnership with the tourist sector (Malindi & Watamu Tourism Welfare Group) intends to launch a communication campaign to crate/enhance awareness and prevent child sex tourism/child sexual exploitation in the Coast Province (mainly Malindi District) targeting the Italian/International Tourists, Local Tourists & the local/resident community.

This campaign will represents only one of the 'communication ingredients" included in the project, since other communication strategies will be adopted in order to promote a different attitude toward child sexual exploitation within the local community and to rise awareness on the profound and permanent damage to children and the community.

In view of the above, CISP intends to produce the following IEC material by the mid of October:

- Signboards (1 in 2 languages)

- Posters (3 targeting the different target groups above mentioned)

- Stickers (1 in 2 languages)

- Logo and Name for the one-year campaign

(more IEC will be developed next year)

Time framework:

- 2^nd-3rd October: Considering the time available between now and the deadline, I would suggest that you take part to a one/or two day meeting to take place in Malindi next week (2-3 October) so you can get a better understanding of the communication objectives/messages, provide precious inputs during the discussion and at the same time starting drafting images based on agreed messages.

- from 4^th to 7^th October draft material should be ready for review by partners

- from 9^th to 13^th October artworks should be refined in readiness to submit it to Unicef on the 14^th of October.

The IEC material will be launched during an international press conference to take place in Malindi between Nov/Dec (hopefully with echo also in Italy) and will be promoted through different web sites and other channels (example: Tour Operator Catalogues, Magazines, flight tickets…etc) in Kenya as well as in Italy.
